Gardenvale is located in an unusual position, between the Nepean Highway and Martin Street rail overpasses, with station access from both.
The station consists of two elevated side platforms; Platform 1 has a large weatherboard building. Platform 2 has a smaller weatherboard building. The adjacent photograph shows the Platform 1 building previous to this fire, which badly damaged the building. The rebuilding works completed in mid 2011 faithfully restored the building. A Myki machine and a large Metcard ticket vending machine are located at the entrance to platform 1. A small coin-only Metcard ticket vending machine is located at the entrance to platform 2.

Gardenvale station opened on 10 December 1906.[1] On 7 December 2009, the station was severely damaged by a fire which investigators described as "suspicious".[2]
